Why Your Garage Door Is So Loud When Opening Or Closing

-

What’s wrong with your garage door system if it makes a loud noise when it opens or closes? When your garage door makes noise, you might be thinking why. This issue could come from several different places, depending on the sound you are hearing.

If something squeaks or bangs, it’s not breaking. You might be able to fix it yourself if it’s something small, like springs that need smoothing out. It might be time to call an expert, though, if it’s something more dangerous, like a broken torsion spring.

Common Garage Door Noises and What They Mean

Some noise is normal, but if you hear something strange, you can usually figure out what’s wrong by listening. Does it rattle, creak, or scrape? You can learn a lot about what’s wrong by listening to the noise.

Rattling

If your garage door openers shakes or vibrates when you open it, some nuts or bolts are likely loose along the track. Most of the time, a wrench and tool will do the trick. But tightening it too much can also damage your garage door, so you might want to call an expert.

Bad grease is another reason why your garage door might rattle when you open or close it. Squeaking doors can also mean they are not balanced. If your new garage door is rattling after being placed, it may not have been put in correctly.

Grinding

Start by checking the rollers if your garage door makes a grinding sound when you open or close it. Rough rollers, especially metal ones, can make a grinding sound. Any signs of damage or wear should lead to replacement, even if they just need oil. An excellent way to lower noise is to use nylon rollers.

Although they are quieter, they don’t need to be oiled and last as long as metal rollers. Noises like grinding can also be caused by a shaft system that isn’t lined up right, problematic hinges, or a track that is bent. Discover where metal is rubbing against metal by looking for metal shavings in these places.

Squeaking

Oiling your garage door may help it stop squeaking so loudly. Lack of lubrication can make the hinges, wheels, pulleys, bearings, and springs make squeaking sounds. It’s possible to find out where the noise is coming from by listening carefully and applying some grease to the area that is making it.

Do this first, and if the clicking still happens, check your rollers and ball bearings for any loose parts. Your doors will also wobble along the track if something is loose.

Banging

When you close or open your garage door, if it makes a loud banging sound, it may not be balanced or have a broken torsion spring. There may be a banging or crashing sound coming from the spring, especially when the door hits the floor. Check the springs and grease them if they need it.

Call garage door services right away if you see any broken or loose springs. If the springs are giving you trouble, don’t try to fix them yourself. The high stress makes them very dangerous.
